NDIS Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

NDIS Behaviour Support in Penrith

We provide positive behaviour support services to help participants reduce behaviours of concern and improve quality of life.

At NEPEAN Advanced Rehab & Allied Health Centre, our NDIS behaviour support services across Penrith and Western Sydney are grounded in the principles of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). We work collaboratively with participants, their families, support coordinators, carers, and broader support teams to understand the unique reasons behind behaviours of concern and create compassionate, proactive strategies.

Our person-centred approach focuses on identifying individual communication needs, sensory triggers, and environmental factors. By strengthening emotional regulation, teaching meaningful replacement skills, and fostering collaborative routines, we empower participants to achieve greater independence, community participation, and long-term wellbeing in safe, supportive environments.

Evidence-Based Framework

What Is NDIS Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-informed, values-led framework designed to understand why behaviours of concern occur and how to support individuals in safe, respectful, and person-centred ways. Under the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, PBS prioritises upholding the human rights, dignity, and autonomy of participants with disabilities.

Rather than viewing behaviour in isolation or seeking to simply suppress actions, PBS recognises that all behaviour serves a functional purpose — often communicating an unmet physical, emotional, sensory, or environmental need. When individuals experience difficulties with verbal communication, emotional regulation, sensory overload, or unexpected routine changes, behaviours of concern may emerge as a coping mechanism.

Our behaviour support practitioners conduct thorough environmental and functional assessments to understand the specific triggers, setting events, and maintaining consequences surrounding these behaviours. We then co-design proactive environmental adjustments and teach functional replacement skills — such as functional communication, self-advocacy, and emotional regulation — which naturally reduce the need for behaviours of concern.

A central pillar of NDIS Positive Behaviour Support is the reduction and ultimate elimination of restrictive practices (including chemical, mechanical, physical, environmental, and seclusion practices) wherever safe and clinically appropriate, ensuring participants enjoy genuine autonomy and enhanced quality of life.

Human Rights & Dignity First

Every strategy is structured to protect participant rights, uphold personal choices, and promote dignity across home, school, work, and community settings.

Understanding Behaviour in Context

We look closely at physical health, communication profiles, sensory processing, and environmental stressors to identify root causes.

Proactive Skill Development

Focusing on teaching communication alternatives, self-regulation techniques, and adaptive daily skills rather than relying on reactive measures.

Restrictive Practice Elimination

Developing clear fade-out strategies and positive environmental adaptations to safely eliminate restrictive practices over time.

Sustainable Outcomes

How Positive Behaviour Support Can Help

Teaching Meaningful Replacement Skills

Equipping participants with alternative ways to express choices, communicate discomfort, request breaks, or navigate challenging social and sensory environments.

Emotional Regulation & Sensory Strategies

Developing personalized emotional regulation tools, sensory diets, and de-escalation pathways that help participants manage anxiety, frustration, or sensory overload.

Improving Daily Routine & Environmental Fit

Modifying physical home and community environments, predictable schedules, and visual supports to reduce anxiety and prevent distress before it arises.

Upskilling Families, Carers & Support Workers

Delivering compassionate, practical coaching and step-by-step guidance to ensure all care team members respond consistently and supportively.

Promoting Community Participation & Independence

Building confidence and coping strategies that enable participants to attend school, engage in social activities, visit local Penrith amenities, and access work opportunities.
